Using the 2nd Edition of BBP with PowerPoint 2003

The second edition of the BBP book has been thoroughly revised and updated for use with PowerPoint 2007, demonstrating how to make use of the latest software features including the new user interface and a much-improved Presenter View.

If you are using the PowerPoint 2007 version of the book but still have PowerPoint 2003, you will not be able to use the PowerPoint 2007 documents that are included on the CD because the latest version of the software is not backward-compatible with earlier versions.

If you have PowerPoint 2003, you can still use the approach by following the basic steps in the book and by downloading the following two versions of the BBP tools that have been modified for use with the earlier software (right-click to download and save the files to your local computer):

PDF Instructions on how to use the 2003 Word and PowerPoint Tools

BBP 2007 Story Template modified for Word 2003

BBP 2007 Storyboard Formatter modified for PowerPoint 2003

NOTE: The BBP Story Template is a Word template document  that ends in file extension ".dot" and the BBP Storyboard Formatter is a PowerPoint template that ends in file extension ".pot". This means that after you download the files to your local computer, each time you click one, it will open a new file and leaves the original formatting of the template intact.

When you open the BBP Storyboard Formatter, it includes only one blank slide. The formatting that is included with the BBP Storyboard Formatter is not visible on this slide, but rather in the PowerPoint 2003 design layouts. To check that the built-in formatting is there, select the blank slide and on the menu bar, select Format, Slide Design. The Slide Design panel will appear on the right of the screen, and there you will see the Key Point, Explanation and Detail layouts described in the book - click one of the layouts to apply it to your slide.

PowerPoint 2003 does not include the Custom Layouts feature included in PowerPoint 2007, but you otherwise can modify the slide master layouts by choosing View, Master, Slide Master and applying changes to the corresponding layouts there.

(See: "Using the BBP Storyboard Formatter" on p. 159 and "Applying Custom Layouts to Your Storyboard" on p. 243.)
